Assam Govt Approves 1 Tola Gold to Brides Under Arundhati Scheme

GUWAHATI: The Assam Cabinet has approved the Arundhati scheme to provide gold at free of cost to the brides.

Under the scheme the government has proposed to give 1 tola of gold (11.66 grams) to brides' parents belonging to the economically weaker sections of the society.

The scheme can be availed by formal registration of the marriages under the Special Marriage (Assam) Rules, 1954 and will reach the beneficiaries at the time of marriage.

This scheme is only limited to economically weaker sections of society whose annual income is below Rs. 5 lakh. The scheme is applicable to all irrespective of caste, creed, religion etc.

Some of the main benefits of the scheme include reducing child marriage. The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act states that a girl in India can’t get married before the age of 18, and a boy cannot get married before the age of 21.

With the introduction of this scheme, the government also proposes to fight against gender inequality and justice.
