Sarma highlighted that the government’s intent to organise this summit stemmed from attracting global investors through targeted roadshows across key international markets.

The summit aims to replicate the success of the 2018 Assam Global Investors’ Summit, which focused on strengthening economic ties with Southeast Asia and fostering growth across sectors such as agriculture, IT, power, and tourism.

The summit will aim to elevate Assam’s strategic position as the gateway to Southeast Asia, aligning with India’s Act East Policy. It will also seek to boost connectivity and economic growth in the Northeast while integrating the region more closely with ASEAN and BBIN nations.

The event will provide a platform to showcase Assam’s investment potential across sectors including infrastructure, renewable energy, river transport, textiles, tourism, and petrochemicals.

Earlier, while presenting the 2024-25 state budget, finance minister Ajanta Neog had proposed to allocate Rs 25 crore for the global summit, but it was postponed.

On enquiring the reason for the delay, a source, who is a senior official of the department had said to GPlus, “There are multiple reasons.” He explained that firstly November was slated for by-elections, following which, even Panchayat elections would be approaching.

The official further stated that whenever an event is organised, it is not only dependent on the organisers, but all the stakeholders who will be participating in the event as well.
