GUWAHATI: Karimganj district will henceforth be known as ‘Sribhumi’ with the Assam cabinet giving its nod to the name change on Tuesday, November 19. This announcement was made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma following a cabinet meeting.

Sarma said Rabindranath Tagore had in 1919 described Sylhet district - now in Bangladesh- as ‘Sribhumi’ when he visited the region; Karimganj was then part of Sylhet.
The chief minister further emphasised that the decision reflects the aspirations of the local people and is part of a broader initiative to restore historically significant names across Assam. “Many places in Assam were not named according to their historical heritage,” he stated. “Just like we had changed the names of a few places like Kalapahar and Sarabhatti earlier, we will continue to rename more places in a phased manner.”
In addition to this, Sarma also disclosed plans for upcoming panchayat elections in Assam. The electoral rolls will be published before December 30, and the elections will conclude by February 10, 2025.
The cabinet also decided to hold the second Assam Investment and Infrastructure Summit, on February 24, which will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
