Assam Government To Regulate Health Sciences Education

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has decided to bring uniformity in Pharmacy, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Paramedical, and other Allied Health Sciences Education in the state.

The government decided to streamline the sector to address the wide variations in admission procedures, teaching standards, and evaluation processes in the institutes offering these courses.

The process of streamlining would include the curriculum, infrastructure, teaching methods, clinical exposure, and examination processes.

Effective from the academic session 2023-24, all institutions in Assam, including those under other universities, will be required to get affiliation from Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS).

Institutions currently offering these courses under the affiliation of universities other than SSUHS must directly apply to SSUHS for migration of their affiliation.

After a thorough examination, SSUHS will grant affiliation to the applicant institutes.

Admission into Pharmacy, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Paramedical, and other Allied Health Sciences courses will be exclusively through an Entrance Examination conducted by SSUHS.

To combat the proliferation of fraudulent institutes misleading unsuspecting students with false degrees and diplomas, the government has directed Deputy Commissioners to take appropriate measures to curtail their activities.

These institutes will be required to obtain regulatory recognition from the government and affiliation from SSUHS to continue operating legally.

The Secretary to the Higher Education (Technical) Department, the Director of Medical Education, and the Registrar of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences will oversee the implementation of the measures.

Additionally, all Deputy Commissioners in Assam have been urged to take necessary actions within their jurisdictions to halt the illegal activities of such institutes and ensure compliance with the government's regulations.

The Registrar of concerned universities has also been notified of these developments.
