Assam Government Proposes Infrastructure Development To Improve Rural To Urban Ratio

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has proposed to develop the urban infrastructure of the towns in the State.

Assam Chief Minister (CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday, February 7, stated that the rural to an urban ratio in Assam is very unsatisfactory when compared to other developed states of the country. While in many states, the rural to urban ratio is almost 50:50, in Assam, it is around 80:20.

Stating that, "Urbanisation definitely helps in reduction of poverty, and more urbanisation, the better will be the economy of the State," CM Sarma proposed rapid infrastructure development in the towns.

These developments include-

1. Integrated DC office to be constructed in all towns: All district officers of the towns will be developed into integrated offices, all smaller officers will be placed together alongside the DC office in one place. Each of such offices will have an adjacent stadium. 10 such stadiums have already been sanctioned.

2. Water supply in towns: With finance from the Centre's Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme, all water supply projects in the towns are to be completed soon.

3. Auditorium: A 1,000 capacity auditorium in each district headquarter, and a 500 capacity auditorium in each small town.

4. Jails to be shifted out of town: All district jails will be shifted out of the town in the next four years. The 50 to 100 bighas of land that will be freed from each jail will be converted into a park.
