GUWAHATI: The Assam government on Wednesday, January 4, announced the recipients of the Assam State Civilian Awards 2023. The awards are conferred upon distinguished personalities and figures for their exemplary service to society.
The Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Assam’s highest civilian award, Assam Baibhav will be bestowed upon Dr Tapan Saikia, an oncologist, for his contributions towards raising awareness about the early detection of cancer in Assam and the other Northeastern states.
Besides Dr Saikia, five personalities have been selected for the ‘Assam Saurav’ award, including
• Krishna Roy, a pioneer of mobile theatre in Assam
• Gilbartson Sangma, an eminent football player who represented both the state and the country
• Binoy Kumar Saikia, Principal Scientist at NEIST, Jorhat
• Dr Sashidhar Phukan, a medical practitioner
• Nayanmoni Saikia, Commonwealth Games gold medalist in lawn bowls.
For the ‘Assam Gaurav’ award, 15 people have been selected which include
• Dhriti Mala Deka (Public Service)
• Debajit Barman (Agriculture and Allied Composite Farming)
• Rustom Basumatary (Tourism)
• Manje La (Agro-Tourism)
• Binanda Hatibaruah (Environment and Forest)
• Atul Chandra Baruah (Social Work)
• Kalyani Rajbonshi (Entrepreneurship/SHG work)
• Shila Gowala (Public Service)
• Jogesh Deuri (Agriculture/Sericulture)
• Pankaj Lal Gogoi (Entrepreneurship)
• Sarbeswar Basumatary (Agriculture)
• Manthang Hmar (Agriculture and Allied Fields)
• Dhrubajyoti Sharma (Agriculture and Allied fields)
• Dayal Goswami (Satriya culture and art)
• Syed Ifthikar Ahmed (Anti-AIDS/Anti-drugs campaigner)
