Assam Government Allows Visitors in Prison

GUWAHATI: The Assam government has allowed visitors in prison after a gap of nearly ten months following which the inmates of all prisons in the state of Assam will finally get to meet their relatives.


The prison visits were suspended since the end of March due to the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic worldwide.


"According to the guidelines issued by the health department on 31st December, 2020 with immediate effect the visits have been allowed maintaining strict restrictions and government protocols. Our Covid-19 position is zero so till now we haven’t received any feedback regarding the meetings but presently we are focusing more on e-meetings according to the prisoner's necessity," Inspector General of Police Barnali Sharma told G Plus when asked about the new guidelines.


Assam currently has 31 jails including 6 Central Jails, 22 District Jails, 1 Special Jail, 1 Open Air Jail and 1 Sub-Jail.
