Assam Gets Rs 5,573 Crore in Latest Tax Devolution from Centre

 

GUWAHATI: The central government has allocated substantial tax devolution funds to northeastern states, with Assam receiving Rs 5,573 crore. This allocation forms part of the Union's October 2024 distribution of taxes and duties, as detailed in a state-wise breakdown.

Among the northeastern beneficiaries, Assam emerged at the forefront, followed closely by Arunachal Pradesh, which received Rs 3,131 crore. Other states in the region also saw notable allocations: Meghalaya (Rs 1,367 crore), Manipur (Rs 1,276 crore), Tripura (Rs 1,261 crore), Nagaland (Rs 1,014 crore), and Mizoram (Rs 891 crore). 

Expressing his appreciation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “My sincere gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji and Finance Minister Smt @nsitharaman ji for releasing ₹5,573cr as tax devolution to Assam. This advance instalment will help us to realise the vision of a Viksit Assam through timely policy interventions.”

While a large amount is being sent to northeastern states, state-wise analysis of the bigger picture shows Uttar Pradesh at the forefront with Rs 31,962 crore and Bihar at Rs 17,921 crore. Tax devolution will help the state governments initiate developmental projects and policies for those states that are at a critical level of infrastructure development.
