GUWAHATI: The expert committee, assigned with examining the state legislature's jurisdiction to enact a law against polygamy, submitted its report on Sunday.
The report was presented to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma by the committee.
Established in May of this year, the committee was chaired by retired Justice Rumi Kumari Phukan. Other members of the committee included Debojit Saikia, the Advocate General of the Assam Government, Nalin Kohli, the Additional Advocate General of the Assam Government, and Nekibur Zaman, a senior advocate of the Gauhati High Court.
The committee's core mandate was to delve into the constitutional and legal intricacies surrounding the enactment of a law to prohibit polygamy in Assam, irrespective of caste, creed, or religion. Additionally, it was entrusted with recommending measures to safeguard the rights and interests of women and children adversely affected by the practice of polygamy.
