GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma arrived in Silchar, Barak Valley on Thursday to inaugurate three bridges spanning the Sonai and Barak rivers and to lay the foundation stones for various development projects in the Cachar and Hailakandi districts, collectively valued at over ₹750 crore.
Upon his arrival at Kumbhirgram Airport in Silchar in the morning, the Chief Minister proceeded to the Badripar Bridge Site, Silchar by road, where he officially inaugurated the Badrighat bridge over the River Barak, connecting Barenga and Kashipur. This bridge, constructed at a cost of ₹58 crore, is nearly 1 kilometre long and includes the approach road, linking NH-37 and NH-54 on the Silchar Fulertal Road.
Subsequently, the Chief Minister inaugurated the second RCC bridge over the Sonai River, which was built at a cost of ₹14 crore. This bridge is significant as it provides road connectivity to over 7,000 residents of Dungripar village in Sonai.
Chief Minister Sarma then proceeded to dedicate the Itkholaghat Bridge in Silchar and laid the foundation for the Silcoorie Convention Centre. In addition, he unveiled a statue of Bir Lachit Borphukan at the Silchar District Commissioner's office.
Following these events, the Chief Minister attended the Jal Jeevan Sanmilan and a public meeting at DSA Ground in Silchar. Subsequently, he departed for Hailakandi to participate in the statue inauguration program of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee in front of S.S. College in the Hailakandi District. From SS College, he attended the foundation stone laying ceremony for Assam Mala (road improvement and upgrading) in Hailakandi Town and addressed a public meeting at the DSA field in Hailakandi.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for the new Integrated District Commissioner's office for Cachar District in Silchar's Bhorakhai area. This state-of-the-art DC Office, set to cost ₹48 crore, is expected to be completed by 2025-2026.
