Phaagun defeated Dhaniska Mahanta in the final with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-2 to secure the title.
Speaking to GPlus, Sanchita Talukdar, Phaagun’s mother, said, “We are pleased with the victory, we feel blessed. With this win, she has retained the top rank in Assam in the under-10 girls singles category. Currently, her rank in under-12 is three in the state and in the national ranking, her position is in top 50.”
This accolade is another to add to Phaagun’s list of achievements, who had already clinched the girls’ under-14 doubles title at the AITA Championship Series Tennis in Haryana’s Rohtak earlier this year. She also finished as the runner-up in the under-12 singles category.
When pressed about Phaagun’s future plans, Sanchita added, “We do have the dream of sending her to the Olympics someday. Only time will tell if our hopes and prayers will be answered.”
Sponsored by Gas Authority of India (GAIL), the tournament offered a cash value of ₹1,11,200, and attracted around 200 players from all over Assam.
