The complaint was lodged in the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup Metro, in Guwahati.

The legal action follows allegations made by Chauhan on February 11 during a press conference in Guwahati. Chauhan had claimed that Sarma invested funds in shopping malls and hotel businesses in Dubai and Singapore.

The chief minister has dismissed these allegations as baseless and unsubstantiated.

In response to the petition, the court has registered the case under CR 78/2025 and issued a pre-cognizance notice to Chauhan. Additionally, the court has summoned the AICC Secretary to appear before it on March 17.

Apart from the criminal defamation case, Sarma has also decided to file a civil defamation suit against the Congress leader.
