Assam: Cab Drivers Demand Extension of Document Renewal Dates

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Cab Operators' Union (AACOU) has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal demanding that the deadline to renew their documents get extended till March 2021.


They have also urged the government to extend the date of payment of their monthly EMIs till March 2021.

In the memorandum, the body also highlighted the price hike of essential commodities and fuel. It stated that the prices of these commodities should be reduced.


Further, the cab operators have also demanded a life insurance cover.


"Our business has been suffering severely ever since anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) protests in December 2019. After the CAA row, the COVID-19 pandemic happened. Since the lockdown started in March, all commercial vehicles had to halt their operations," president of the body, Ismail Ali told G Plus.

Ali said that due to these circumstances, the cab operators have not been able to earn or renew their documents. 


It should be mentioned that there are over 30,000 cabs operating in Guwahati. Out of these, approximately 12,000 are online cab services such as Ola and Uber.
