GUWAHATI: The All Assam Cab Workers Association has declared a 48-hour strike on January 5 and January 6, 2024. A spokesperson from the association confirmed to GPlus that during these two days, cab services will come to a complete halt.

"We are not operating on the said days, and no cabs will be available. If any unauthorised drivers are found operating during the strike, it is by their own choice," emphasised the spokesperson.

The spokesperson further mentioned that the call for strike is to express dissent against the "Hit and Run" law, a component of the "National Vehicle and Traffic Act," enacted by the central government in 2014.

The recent amendment to the law, known colloquially as the "Hit and Run" law makes the drivers liable for penalties up to ₹10 lakh or imprisonment for a period of up to 10 years.

The announcement has left commuters in a predicament. A resident of Ulubari who works in Dispur, expressed concern saying, "I wasn’t aware till today evening that there is a strike tomorrow. How am I supposed to go to work tomorrow? This kind of information should have been communicated earlier."

Another resident of Zoo Road said, “I have to reach airport tomorrow by 11 AM. With the strike, now I don’t know what to do.”

This call for 48 hours of strike has left the residents in a dilemma and the collective impact on daily life and travel arrangements remains a pressing concern.
