Assam: Another Pregnant Woman Assaulted By Police Officials in Barpeta, Loses Child

GUWAHATI: In yet another unfortunate incident, four persons including a pregnant woman was physically assaulted on Thursday, September 19 by police officials in Barpeta district of the state. 

Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Binod Choudhury and other policemen allegedly assaulted a 25-year-old pregnant woman identified as Shukhiya Khatun and three others at their house in Nichuka village when questioning them about a relative who had eloped with a girl. 

Based on a report by The Telegraph, Khatun said that police forcibly entered their house looking for a relative, Shahidul Islam and when they were unable to find him, they started beating Khatun and other residents of the house. She also alleged that police beat her and the others till dawn and did not stop even after they started bleeding.

The 25-year-old also alleged that her pregnancy had to be terminated because of the injuries she had sustained during the incident. 

Khatun’s brother-in-law had allegedly eloped with a girl after which the girl’s father had lodged a complaint with Amguri police station in Chirang district and a case of kidnapping was registered at Amguri police station against the accused. 

Following the police complaint, a team of police officials raided Khatun’s house and assaulted the residents, two women and a man in addition to Khatun. 

Barpeta SP Robin Kumar has stated that a case has been registered against ASI Binod Choudhury following the incident.

It should be mentioned that this is the second such case which has happened in the state in the past few weeks. Earlier on September 9, a 2-month pregnant woman along with her two sisters was allegedly stripped of their clothes and beaten mercilessly during an interrogation session at Burha Police Outpost in Darrang district in Assam.
