Briefing the press after a Cabinet meeting in Nalbari where the decision was taken, on Thursday, June 27, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, however, explained that for all other offences legal action will follow. On the other hand, auto and E-rickshaws, will be fined only after repeated offence.

He further said that, for offences relating to documents, time will be given for rectification. "The transport department has been directed to establish clear standard operating procedures (SOPs) to streamline enforcement," stated Sarma.

Sarma said only Rs 6-7 crores were earned through fines last year. "Targeting poor people for such minor amounts is unacceptable," he said.
