GUWAHATI: Assam Skill Development Mission (ASDM) has taken a significant step towards addressing unemployment in the region with the launch of the Assam Job Portal. In addition, the mission has inaugurated the upskilling of 100 hotel staff in Guwahati, providing unemployed youths in Assam with better opportunities.
The ceremony, held in Guwahati, was graced by Jayanta Mallabaruah, Minister of the Department of Tourism. B. Kalyan Chakravarthy, Principal Secretary to the Govt. of Assam, Labour Welfare Department, and Harveen Bedi, CEO of Naukri.com, virtually addressed the event. The Mission Director, Ankur Jain, and the Director of Employment and Craftsmen Training, Kasturi Bharali, represented the respective departments of the Government of Assam.
Under the auspices of ASDM, a memorandum of understanding was signed with Naukri.com, aiming to provide a better platform and opportunities for unemployed youths in Assam. The newly launched job portal, job.assam.gov.in, equips individuals with up-to-date information about their skills, capabilities, and where to apply for jobs.
Jayanta Mallabaruah expressed his delight, stating, "It's a joyous day for us as we flagged off two important programs under ASDM. Across India, naukri.com is a renowned entity. Their alliance with us will open a vast domain in the context of employment. And another highlight is upskilling 100 hotel employees of Kamakhya and Paltan Bazaar area."
The upskilling training program, facilitated by the Institute of Technical Education, Singapore, is a short-term course that spans 40 hours over 10 days. The training aims to enhance the skills of hotel staff in the Kamakhya and Paltan Bazaar areas and play a crucial role in shaping tourists' perceptions of Guwahati.
Previously, ASDM provided training to approximately 100 drivers from Guwahati airport, guides, and personnel of Jeep Safaris, imparting knowledge about handling visitors and guests in Assam.
Harveen Bedi, CEO of Naukri.com, praised the state's efforts in tackling unemployment, saying, "In all these years of experience in the corporate sector, I've never seen a state working so hard for the unemployed."
Kalyan Chakravarthy, Principal Secretary to the Government of Assam, Labor Welfare Department, added, "Apart from an economic perspective, this is an emotional integrity of Assam with the centre, provided with an indigenous and modern skill acquired by individuals. People will be aware of the jobs, where to apply, and how to follow up."
Since 2017, ASDM has trained approximately 4 lakh individuals. Unfortunately, personal problems led half of them to discontinue their training. However, out of the 125,000 applicants who were trained, around 75,000 individuals are currently employed in various professional engagements.
Ankur Jain, the Mission Director, emphasised the opportunities available in sectors such as food and beverage, hospitality, electrical, mechanical, and agriculture.
The launch of the Assam Job Portal has brought new hope to both job seekers and employers. Previously, job seekers struggled to find reliable information about employment and vacancies. With this new initiative, the Government of Assam has provided a ray of hope for the people of Assam.
