APDCL: 6 to 7% AT&C loss in Guwahati, 15% in Assam

GUWAHATI: The annual aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) loss in Guwahati is 6 to 7 per cent while in the state it is around 15 to 16 per cent, which is also the national average.

AT&C loss is an actual measure of performance of a  power distribution system as it includes both technical losses and commercial losses. It shows the gap of input energy into the system and the units for which the payment is collected.

In Guwahati, the demand of electricity is 450 MW and in Assam the demand for electricity is around 2400 MW during peak hours. The AT&C loss is a concerning issue for the APDCL, but officials say that now the situation is under control.

A senior official of APDCL said that the national average is 15 per cent and Guwahati witnesses 6 to 7 per cent AT&C loss which is very less. He said that around 3 per cent loss is because of technical reasons which are understandable and the commercial reasons are non-payment of bills and electricity theft. In 2020-21, the loss was 18.73 per cent, and 16.95 per cent in 2021-22.

The official said the commercial loss across the state is mostly in rural areas and various measures are being taken to reduce it. He also said that consumers using more the 5KW power should convert to 3-phase connection and those using more than 30KW should have individual transformer. APDCL levies penalty of this is not done, and this is also a major reason for AT&C loss.
