GUWAHATI: There have been reports of zoo animals dying of Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) at the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden. The zoo authorities have confirmed the death of five jackals due to this disease.

This virus which attacks the brain of the animals has been detected for the first time in Guwahati zoo and can affect a large number of animal species within the zoo premises.

Speaking to G Plus Azam Siddiqui, Master Trainer in Animal Welfare with AWBI said, “What needs to be probed into is, how many entry and exit points are there in the zoo premises, because dogs being carrier of CDV perhaps may have passed it on (although this is just a speculation). I am also not sure what the strength of the homeless dog population is inside the zoo premises and whether they all have been vaccinated for CDV. This is an alarming incident and all measures should be undertaken at a war footing to stop its spread to other vulnerable inmates including the big cats. Meanwhile, I have also asked the AWBI to see how best they can extend their support.”

According to Guwahati zoo officials, the vaccine for the Canine distemper is expensive and is only available in the USA. Efforts are being made to get by Monday and start the vaccination drive by 21st August. Once the vaccine is received it will be given to all the animals in the zoo.

In the meantime, zoo officials are trying to stop the spread of the virus by taking immediate preventive steps.
