Anganwadi Workers Demand Clarity On Salary Hike In Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Hundreds of Anganwadi workers and helpers from across Assam staged a massive demonstration at Chachal in Guwahati on Friday, seeking clarity from the state government regarding the exact amount of their promised salary hike.

During the state budget session on March 10, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog announced an increase in salaries for Anganwadi workers. However, the government has yet to disclose the exact figures, leaving workers in uncertainty.

The protesters demanded that the government declare the revised salaries before the budget session concludes. This is not the first time Anganwadi workers have taken to the streets—similar protests over wages and working conditions have been ongoing for years.

"A helper earns only ₹102.50 per day. How can they sustain their families with such a low wage?" questioned Indira Newar, Secretary of the Assam State Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Association. "We urge the government to ensure fair pay for workers who play a crucial role in child welfare."

Newar pointed out that while the government has discussed the matter in the Vidhan Sabha and proposed the hike from October 1, workers need clarity now. "We want the final announcement in this budget session. We are ready to submit our proposal, but who will take responsibility for making sure it is implemented?" she asked.

Jaymati Das, President of the association, also said that Anganwadi workers will continue their agitation until the government provides a concrete response.

With no clear assurance from the authorities yet, the protesters have vowed to intensify their movement in the coming days.
