Akhil Gogoi begins Hunger Strike from today, on the festival of ‘Uruka’

GUWAHATI: Peasant leader and activist, Akhil Gogoi began his 24-hour hunger strike at Chachal, Guwahati to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. 

Gogoi began his strike at 2 p.m. today and will continue it until 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15. He had earlier mentioned that he will not celebrateuruka’ and ‘bhogali bihu this year as “Assam’s tradition and culture are at threat.”

It should be noted that the Citizenship Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on January 8 and stalled by Rajya Sabha on January 9 following strong opposition from Congress and other parties.
