AGP's list of Candidates to be Announced on March 17

GUWAHATI: The list of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) candidates for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections will be announced on March 17th, 2019.

Reportedly, a delegation of the AGP will fly to New Delhi on March 15th, 2019 to finalize the seat-sharing deal with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah.

Two months after pulling out over the much-debated Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, the AGP and BJP are back as allies in poll-bound Assam. The AGP along with BJP had contested the 2016 Assam Assembly elections and defeated the Congress which had been in power in the state for three consecutive terms since 2001.

“The AGP is going to push for five Lok Sabha seats and one Rajya Sabha seat. On March 16, 2019, the AGP delegation will hold talks with Shah regarding seat-sharing,” said  Ramendra Narayan Kalita, AGP general secretary.

He further added that the BJP has assured the AGP to not take up the CAB issue without consulting them.

Earlier, AGP’s three ministers in the Sarbananda Sonowal government – Atul Bora, Keshav Mahanta and Phani Bhushan Choudhury, had resigned in order to protest the NDA-led Centre’s decision to get the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 passed in the Parliament.
