GUWAHATI: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has named Diptimoyee Choudhury as its official candidate for the upcoming Assam Assembly bye-elections. Choudhury, the wife of Phani Bhushan Choudhury—a current Member of Parliament for Barpeta and former MLA of Bongaigaon—will represent the AGP in the forthcoming polls from Bongaigaon constituency.

AGP's decision has sparked significant unrest within its Bongaigaon unit. A total of 34 members, including the unit's president and secretary, have resigned in protest over Diptimoyee’s nomination.
Those opposing her candidacy argue that she should not represent the constituency under any circumstances. Among the resigning members are five Panchayat presidents.
The bye-elections are scheduled for 13th November, covering key constituencies such as Bongaigaon, Sidli, Behali, Samaguri, and Dholai. Subsequently, the votes will be counted on 23rd November.
The Congress recently announced its list of candidates for the byepolls as well. Contestants include Dhrubajyoti Purakayastha for Dholai (SC), Sanjib Warle for Sidli (ST), Brajenjit Sinha for Bongaigaon, and Tanzil Hussain for the Samaguri constituency.
