GUWAHATI: Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on January 16 criticised Assam Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal over the push to implement Clause 6 of the historic 1985 Assam Accord.

AGP leader and president Atul Bora said that it is meaningless to implement Clause 6 without implementing Clause 5 of the Assam Accord. The BJP in Assam is labeling the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill as a leftist movement. He asked Sonowal to “look back and remember the past.”

He further added that the people of Assam are not protesting against the Bill targeting the election. The Bill has been passed in the Lok Sabha and it now depends on how it is addressed by the Rajya Sabha. He said that they are monitoring the role of the parties and leaders, including Congress.

Also, AGP founder and two-time chief minister, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta targeted Sonowal, and said that "people who have trust in regionalism, don't surrender to nationalism".

The Assam Accord was a Memorandum of Settlement signed between representatives of the Government of India and the leaders of the Assam Movement in New Delhi on August 15, 1985 in the presence of Rajiv Gandhi, the then Prime Minister.

It should be mentioned that the AGP came out of the BJP-led government in Assam after the BJP went ahead with the controversial Bill in the Lok Sabha.
