AFSPA Withdrawn From 28 Assam Districts, Says DGP

GUWAHATI: Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh on Saturday announced that due to the remarkable improvement in the state's law and order situation, the government has successfully withdrawn the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from 28 out of 35 districts of Assam.

DGP GP Singh praised the Assam police force for their diligent efforts in promoting fair and transparent recruitment.

“Guided by the vision of Hon @CMOfficeAssam & supported by people of Assam, @assampolice has invested in fair & transparent recruitment, training and capacity upgradation. Through this, we’ve been able to withdraw AFSPA from 28 out of 36 districts. The improved L&O has seen reduction of CAPF deployment in field L&O duties from 210 Companies a couple of years back to 73 Companies now. We intend to move further ahead and not look back.,” read GP Singh’s tweet.

The collective efforts have resulted in significant progress, allowing for the reduction of central paramilitary forces deployed for field duty from 210 companies a few years ago to 73.

During a recent press conference, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasised the government's aim to completely repeal the AFSPA by the end of 2023. However, he also stated that it is now the responsibility of the Assam police force to strengthen themselves and create a situation in which the presence of AFSPA is unnecessary.
