GUWAHATI: An outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) has hit the Karbi Anglong hill district of Assam, prompting district commissioner Nirola Phangchopi to implement stringent containment measures.

According to reports, the outbreak originated in Bura Teron Gaon within the Diphu revenue circle. Officials identified several infected pigs, necessitating the establishment of an 'Infected Zone' within a 10-kilometre radius of the epicentre. The Surrounding areas has been designated as 'Surveillance Zones' to monitor and control the potential spread of the disease.
In accordance with the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, authorities has been prohibited the movement of pigs and related products into and out of the affected areas. Furthermore, all markets, fairs, and public gatherings involving pigs are banned until the situation is under control.
The transportation of carcasses, feed, and pork products through the infected area has also been restricted. In a bid to prevent further transmission of the disease, authorities cull infected animals, with operations expected to conclude within three days. Strict measures are enforced, and the proper disposal of culled animals follows the culling process.
