GUWAHATI: As the state is preparing for Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s three-day visit to the Northeast starting from February 8, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has stated that the organisation’s activists will burn effigies of the PM in Assam on February 8.

Addressing media persons in Guwahati, AASU president Dipankar Kumar Nath said that on February 8, AASU activists will burn effigies of Prime Minister Modi and replicas of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in numerous districts of the state. He added that they are against his visit to this region as he is against the interests of the people here.

Nath further said that they have been vocal about their stand on the Bill and have been raising this issue for a long time. However, the PM is not paying attention to their demands and instead the government is adamant on passing the Bill at Rajya Sabha. He said that they will continue to protest against the Bill until their wishes are fulfilled.

It should be noted that the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has also threatened to create unrest in the region if the Bill is passed in Rajya Sabha. This news also came days before the PM’s visit to Assam, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh.
