AASU Lines Up Protests As CAA Rules Set To Be Notified

 

GUWAHATI: All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has decided to burn effigies tonight as it became clear that rules for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) will be notified by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) anytime now, thus operationalising the law enacted in 2019.

Speaking to GPlus, Samujjal Bhattacharya, Chief Adviser, AASU stated, "We are planning to burn effigies tonight. And from tomorrow a continuous non violent, peaceful, democratic movement will be staged by all the North East Students Organisation across Assam. We are also planning wage legal battles to oppose the rules."

Earlier, Anti-CAA bike rallies were held across Assam led by AASU along with 30 tribal organisations on March 7. Protestors raised slogans against Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and PM Narendra Modi. The protestors demanded for the implementation of the report of Biplab Sharma and provision of constitutional safeguards under the Assam accord.
