GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has decided to impose a three-month cooling-off period for the leaders between leaving the students’ body and joining a political party.

The announcement came after an AASU general conference held at Jonai in Assam’s Dhemaji district on October 26th. AASU unanimously decided that its cadre must serve a cooling-off period and no office-bearer will be allowed to join a political party after completion of his/her tenure.

The AASU leaders informed that several leaders joining political parties have affected the apolitical character of the organization. Hence AASU was discussing for long on how to tackle this problem of leaders joining political parties immediately after completing their tenure.

Several prominent political figures from Assam were once associated with AASU. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was an AASU president and former CM Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and several ministers of his cabinet are also former AASU leaders.
