A Bill in Lok Sabha might put a limit of 5 Lakhs on Wedding Expenditures

Ranjeet Rajan, an MP from Bihar, has introduced a private bill in Lok Sabha to curb the money spent on lavish weddings. Does this remind you of the statement made by Arun Jaitley after demonetization where people waiting to get married were worst hit and he said, ‘Shagun for a wedding doesn’t have to be lakhs but just Re. 1?’. Well, this seems to be coming true now. People have used Indian weddings to show off their social status – Themed weddings, pre-wedding shoots and more. This bill introduced by MP Ranjeet Rajan wants to put a check on the ‘show of wealth’ people do when they arrange a wedding in India. The Idea of the bill is if you spend more than 5 lakhs on a wedding ceremony, you have to donate 10 percent of that to a wedding of a girl from a poor family. The reason MP Ranjeet Rajan introduced this bill is to stop the extravagant spending on weddings.  She says in a country like India, this kind of show of wealth puts a lot of pressure on poor people to spend less. The bill also wants the married couple to register within 60 days of the wedding. If Lok Sabha approves this bill and passes it, the Government will decide the number of guests a ceremony will have and how lavish the food spread is. Although the magnitude of responsibility on the Government in case this bill gets passed will be magnanimous, it will slow down the lavish weddings in the country.
