88 Years Of Joymoti: The First Assamese Feature Film


GUWAHATI: March 10 is a special date for all the cinema enthusiasts of the country, especially Assam.

On March 10, 1935, the first Assamese movie, Joymoti, was released.Joymoti was also the fourth Indian talkie that was released 88 years ago. It was based on a play called Soti Joymoti by Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaroa.

The story revolves around the 17th-century Ahom princess Soti Joymoti.

Joymoti was produced and directed by the noted Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala.

It starred Aideu Handique, the first Assamese female actor, along with acclaimed stage actor and playwright Phani Sarma.

The film, shot between 1933 and 1935, was released by Chitralekha Movietone in 1935. It marked the beginning of Assamese cinema.

Joymoti introduced dubbing and re-recording technology in Indian cinema.

Jyotiprasad Agarwala himself voiced the character of Laluksola Borphukan.

It was also the first movie made in India that dealt with "realism" and politics.
