GUWAHATI: After 83 long days and three attempts, Oil India Limited (OIL) has successfully installed the Blow Out Preventer (BOP) and the stack at the mouth of the Baghjan 5 well and has bolted the wellhead.

The preparations for killing the well are finally on.

Tridiv Hazarika, Deputy General Manager and PR spokesperson of OIL, speaking to G Plus said, "The initial operation is done. But today is the actual test. "Around 12:30 pm we will be injecting the viscous cement, that is, the killing fluid will be injected through the inlet at very high pressure. This will reach around 3.5 km to the depth of the reservoir. The mud should block the perforations and the gas."

"This is the most worrisome part as anything might happen. We are however very hopeful. The whole operation might take 24 to 30 hours, but we should get a clear indication of the situation in about 9 hours of starting," added Hazarika.

A massive blowout had occurred at the Baghjan 5 reservoir of Oil India Limited in Tinsukia district on 27th May last. The uncontrollably leaking gas caught fire on 9th June. OIL has been trying to seal the reservoir ever since.
