34 Dead, 100 Hospitalised After Consuming Illicit Liquor In Tamil Nadu

 

GUWAHATI: A devastating incident in Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi district has left at least 34 people dead and around 100 others hospitalised after consuming illicit liquor. Authorities fear the death toll could rise further as several patients remain in critical condition.

The tragedy unfolded on Wednesday, June 19, sending shockwaves across the state. By Thursday, officials had detained four individuals allegedly connected to the illegal liquor trade.

Many of the affected individuals are receiving emergency care in hospitals across Salem, Tiruvannamalai, and Puducherry. In response to the crisis, Chief Minister MK Stalin has mandated a thorough investigation by the Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department (CB-CID).

Furthermore, the government has implemented immediate administrative changes. Kallakurichi's district collector and superintendent of police have been replaced while nine police officers from the prohibition wing have been suspended.

The opposition party AIADMK has taken legal action, with their advocates filing a petition to the Madras High Court seeking urgent intervention. A division bench, consisting of Justices D Krishnakumar and K Kumaresh Babu, has agreed to hear the petition on Friday.
