22 cases of Molestation reported in Assam in 2 months

According to a data produced by UTSAH (Universal Team for Social Action and Help), based on secondary analysis, 22 cases of rape and molestation have been reported across the state of Assam in the month of March and April.

The places where this heinous crime has been reported are - Guwahati, Kokrajhar, Hailakandi, Barpeta, Dhubri, Goalpara, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, and Majuli.

It is to be noted that these are only the cases that have been reported by the media or registered at the respective police stations. Reportedly, 60-70% cases of molestation go unreported.

In a recent analysis done by G Plus on precautions that girls can take to ensure safety, Miguel Das Queah, Child Rights Activist said that it is high time we build the culture of responding and reporting such cases. No case should go unreported.

"Nothing will change in the society until strict punishments are implemented against such crimes. While law and order does their part, we should also take safety precautions at our side. Girls should be very much cautious about stalkers. It is very important to let some or the other in the family know the details of a cab if you go somewhere," said Srutimala Duwarah, Professor at Handique Girls' College.
