GUWAHATI: The world’s highest railway bridge, known as the Chenab Bridge, will be inaugurated on Saturday, April 19, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This announcement was made by Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh on Monday, April 7.

“Countdown begins…In just 12 days from now, on April 19, 2025, PM Sh Narendra Modi will inaugurate the world’s highest railway bridge — the iconic Chenab Bridge!” Singh posted on X.
The Chenab Bridge is located in Jammu and Kashmir, and is a key part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail project. With a height of 359 metres and a length of 13,115 metres, the bridge surpasses even the Eiffel Tower in elevation. It has been described as an engineering achievement and has been expected to enhance rail connectivity across the region.
Constructed to endure extreme weather conditions, the bridge is designed to withstand winds up to 260 kilometres per hour. It also meets high safety standards, having passed tests related to earthquakes, temperature variation, and hydrological impact. The structure is built with a lifespan of 120 years and incorporates several sustainable and eco-friendly construction practices.
Recently, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the New Pamban Bridge in Tamil Nadu on Sunday, April 6. The New Pamban Bridge, India’s first vertical lift sea bridge, connects Rameswaram to the mainland and was launched alongside the new Rameswaram-Tambaram train service.
