Tezpur: Lambasting the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government for “imposing” Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on people of Assam, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra today said that her party will bring a law to nullify the Citizenship Amendment Act if voted to power in the state. This the Congress leader said while launching a “5-gaurantee” campaign of the party for the ensuing elections.
“They passed CAA after promising you to protect ‘Jati, Mati, Bheti’. We will bring a law to nullify CAA in Assam if voted to power”, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said while addressing an election rally in the second day of her visit to Assam.
“This election is an election of trust. The people of Assam were cheated by a party five years ago that promised them 25 lakh jobs but gave them CAA instead. The Congress party is not making empty promises but undertaking 5 guarantees,” she said.
Addressing a public rally at Tezpur which is basically a tea belt area, the Congress party leader hit out at both the state and the central government for luring people before election by making ‘false promises’ which were never fulfilled.
The 5-guarantee include a law that nullifies the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA); 5 lakh government jobs; raising tea workers’ wages to Rs 365; free electricity up to 200 units per household and Rs 2,000 monthly income support to all housewives.
Explaining the rationale of the 5 guarantees, she said the party had identified the top issues facing the people through the ‘Asom Basaon Ahok’ Yatra and was now presenting its solutions to the public.
Interestingly, the party’s face from the Barak valley former MP Sushmita Dev was silent on the CAA while talking about other benefits of the 5-guarantee campaign.
Meanwhile, during her two-day stay in poll-bound Assam which started on Monday last, she met unemployed youths, visited tea gardens and interacted with the tea garden labourers.
