GUWAHATI: A heated exchange has ensued between Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh and Ripun Bora, National Spokesperson of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and President of the party’s Assam unit, over democratic rights and law enforcement measures after the Assam Police issued legal notices with regard to the “Sarbatmak Hartal” called by the United Opposition Forum.

Singh defended the notices emphasising the police’s aim to prevent damage to public property and ensure public safety during potential agitations in protest against implementation of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Referring to past incidents, in December 2019, Singh stressed the need for preemptive measures to avoid violence and vandalism.

In response, Ripun Bora condemned the notices as an infringement on democratic rights, asserting that protest is a fundamental aspect of democracy. Accusing the BJP-led government of attempting to suppress dissent, Bora vowed to stand with the people of Assam despite potential consequences.
