GUWAHATI: The Ministry of Education has approved the establishment of a full-fledged Department of Assamese at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, West Bengal.

The decision, aimed at promoting Assamese as a Classical Language, includes the creation of teaching and non-teaching posts as recommended by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
"It is heartening to note that the @EduMinOfIndia has approved the establishment of a full-fledged Department of Assamese at Visva Bharati University in Shantiniketan,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X. “Four posts have been recommended by @ugc_india for imparting effective Assamese education. We are committed to take our Classical Language far and wide and promote its usage.”
As per the UGC's recommendations, the Department of Assamese will include one associate professor and three assistant professors. The initiative has been taken to strengthen Assamese education and expand its reach within the academic sphere.
The department's development is also aligned with the ministry's broader goal of enhancing regional language education and ensuring their representation in national institutions. Authorities at Visva-Bharati have been directed to submit the required checklist through the Samarth Portal to expedite the establishment process.
