GUWAHATI: Rescue teams recovered two more bodies from the waterlogged coal mine in Assam’s Umrangshu, raising the death toll to four, on Saturday, January 11.

According to the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), this follows the recovery of one miner’s body earlier in the morning.
The identity of the third and fourth miners are Khushi Mohan Rai and Sarat Goyary. Rai hailed from Kokrajhar and was 57 years old, while Goyary was a resident of Sonitpur, and he was 37 years old.
The bodies were immediately taken in by the authorities once they were recovered from the mine.
Earlier, the second victim was identified as Ligen Magar, 27, a resident of Umrangshu, while Army divers from the 21 Para Special Forces had retrieved the first body on January 8, who was identified as Ganga Bahadur Srestha of Nepal’s Udayapur district.
Although there were initial reports of 15 workers being trapped in the mine, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma released the names of nine. Authorities have also arrested two individuals who were allegedly in charge of the mine’s operations, which has been deemed to be illegal.
Further dewatering operations are in full swing to assist with the search and rescue mission for the remaining five workers.
