GUWAHATI: Nipon Goswami one of the veteran actors of Assamese Film Industry passed away today on October 27, 2022. He was born on September 3, 1942 at Kolibari in Tezpur, Assam. He was unwell for the past few days and was undergoing treatment in a hospital in Guwahati.
In his initial years, he started his acting career as a stage actor and later established himself as a film actor. His debuted in Assamese film industry with Piyali Phukan, 1957 a movie directed by Phani Sarma. He performed as a child artist there. His first Assamese hit film was Sangram where he was the lead. His next movie Dr Bezbaruah,1969 brought him recognition and success as a star. This paved the way for his acting career in the next coming years. He also acted in few Hindi movies
Nipon Goswami was awarded the 'life in a theatre award' at the Guwahati Theatre Festival 2019 for his invaluable contributions towards Assamese cinemas and culture.
His father, Chandradhar Goswami was a popular Assamese actor too and his mother Nirupama Goswami was a well-known singer. He did his primary schooling from Kolibari Lower Primary (LP) School. After that he moved to Tezpur Govt. HS School.
After completing his Bachalors of Arts (B.A) degree, he went Calcutta for an interview in Pune Film Institute. In 1965, he went to Pune for his acting training where Subhash Ghai, Navin Nischol, Shatrughan Sinha etc were his contemporaries.
