Urban Water Supply Management Undergoes Structural Change In Assam

GUWAHATI: The Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) has decided to transfer the responsibility of maintaining and operating urban public water supply (PWS) schemes from Municipalities to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), as per a decision undertaken by the Assam Government in the State Cabinet Meeting on January 31.

This shift aims to enhance efficiency and ensure better management of water resources for the growing urban population. ULBs will now be responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of PWS schemes within Municipalities.

ULBs, being closer to the ground, are anticipated to have a more nuanced understanding of local needs and challenges, allowing for more tailored solutions and prompt responses to issues affecting water supply.

The change is expected to bring about improved accountability, transparency, and responsiveness in managing water resources, ensuring that urban populations receive uninterrupted and high-quality water services.
