ULFA To Sign Accord On December 29

GUWAHATI: The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) is set to sign the accord on December 29 in New Delhi in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

While speaking to GPlus, Anup Chetia, ULFA Secretary said, “We have already had the first round of discussion today and will have the second round of discussion tomorrow amd we are hopeful that the accord will be signed on December 29.”

He further mentioned that he along with ULFA’s Foreign Secretary, Sasha Chaudhury and two other members are currently participating in the discussion.

“The Central Committee members including Arobindo Rajkhowa and Pradeep Gogoi along with 14 others will be arriving in Delhi in the upcoming days ahead of the signing,” Chetia further added.

The ULFA was formed in April 1979 following an agitation against undocumented immigrants from Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan). It splintered into two factions in February 2011, with the Arobindo Rajkhowa-led faction renouncing violence and agreeing to unconditional talks with the government. Paresh Baruah, leading the other faction renamed as ULFA-Independent, opposes the talks.
