The UGC’s decision was finaliSed during a meeting on April 3, where the Standing Committee on Autonomous Colleges recommended granting the autonomous status to DHSK College, located at K.C. Gogoi Path, Dibrugarh, Assam. This new status will be in effect from the 2025–2026 academic year through to 2034–2035. The college, affiliated with Dibrugarh University, is now expected to adhere to the provisions laid out by the UGC's Autonomous Colleges Regulations, 2023. This includes fulfilling the compliance requirements, with non-compliance leading to actions as per Clause 13 of the UGC Regulations.
The UGC's regulations allow for greater flexibility in curriculum design, fostering innovation and offering enhanced opportunities for both students and faculty. The college must apply for an extension of this autonomous status at least three months prior to its expiration in 2035.
Assam’s Education Minister, Ranoj Pegu, expressed his congratulations to the institution on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Congratulations to Dibrugarh Hanumanbax Surajmall Kanoi College on being granted Autonomous Status for 10 years by UGC. This recognition reflects the institution’s academic excellence and commitment to quality education, paving the way for greater innovation, flexibility in curriculum design, and enhanced opportunities for students and faculty alike.”
Established on June 15, 1945, DHSK College has long served as a pillar of higher education in Upper Assam. Initially affiliated with Calcutta University, it became part of Gauhati University in 1948. The college has continuously evolved, contributing to the academic development of the region.
