GUWAHATI: The pro-talk United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), a militant outfit that had been active for 44 years, announced its formal dissolution as part of a tripartite agreement signed on December 29, 2023. This historic move comes in accordance with a crucial clause in the agreement, mandating the outfit to renounce violence, surrender all arms and ammunition, and disband within one month.

The tripartite agreement was signed by representatives from the central government, the state government, and the ULFA. As per the terms outlined in the pact, the outfit has now taken the step of disbanding, marking the end of a four-decade-long chapter of insurgency in Assam.

Taking to X, the director general of Assam police GP Singh stated, "One of the biggest event of our Nations contemporary history. ULFA dissolves after 44 years: Historic tripartite agreement prompts disbandment and rehabilitation efforts."

This dissolution is expected to contribute to lasting peace and stability in the region, as ULFA moves away from its militant past to engage in peaceful dialogue and resolution.
