The decision was taken after the UGC's Standing Committee found that these universities were not following the UGC's PhD Regulations and academic norms for awarding PhD degrees.
The three universities that have been debarred are:
1. OPJS University, Churu, Rajasthan
2. Sunrise University, Alwar, Rajasthan
3. Singhania University, Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan
The UGC has directed these universities to immediately discontinue enrolling Ph.D. students, as the ban will be in effect from the academic year 2025-26 to 2029-30.
Prospective students and their parents have also been advised not to seek admission in the Ph.D. programs offered by these universities, as the degrees awarded by these universities for the same will not be recognised for higher education and employment purposes.
The universities were given an opportunity to explain their non-compliance, but their responses were found to be unsatisfactory. Thus, the UGC took this action based on the recommendations of the Standing Committee.
