Two Assam Youths Shine In National Arm Wrestling Championship

GUWAHATI: In a recent development, youths from Assam excelled in the National Arm Wrestling Championship in Goa held from May 18 to 20.

Monoj Debnath from Guwahati clinched a Gold Medal in the 63 Kg Senior Men's category in both right and left hands and got selected for World Arm Wrestling Championship to be held in France in September 2022. Debnath will also be representing India in the Asian Arm Wrestling Championship to be held in Malaysia from June 16 to 20.

Another youth from the State, Bishal Das, hailing from Pathsala bagged Silver Medal in the left hand, below 86 Kg category. Das has been selected for the Asian and World Championships to be held in France and Malaysia. Earlier, he secured Gold Medal in his left hand and Silver Medal in his right hand in the below 86 Kg category in the State Championship held in Tezpur in April.

Deepankar Mech, hailing from Jorhat have also won Gold Medal in under 70 Kg category in the recent National Arm Wrestling Championship in Goa.

Interestingly, three other players from Assam have also been selected for the Asian and World Championships. They are Pranjit Saikia, Kumar Nibir Shyamanta, and Priyanshu Dutta.

A total of 18 states in the country participated in the National Armwrestling Championship inaugurated by Goa’s Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar.
