Train carrying Kerala flood victims from Assam reaches Guwahati

GUWAHATI: A special train from Kerala carrying flood-affected people of Assam arrived at Paltan Bazar Railway Station, Guwahati on 23rd August, at 4:15 PM.

According to the police officials present at the railway station, at least 25 percent of the total flood affected passengers have deboarded at Paltan Bazar Railway Station.

Most victims had gone to Kerala for work opportunities. However, due to the flood, they lost their jobs and have therefore returned home. Talking to G Plus Mohammad Yasim Ali from Guwahati had been working in Kerala since the past 8 months. The walls of his workplace also broke down due to the floods. "One of the walls fell on my leg and I got badly injured. My workplace has shut down for the time bring and I lost my job."

The train carried only distressed people. According to officials, till Howrah, there were around 2500 people on board. However, till Bongaigaon, around 400 remained and by the time it reached Guwahati, some 200 people were left on board. Out of which. most of them deboarded at   Paltan Bazar Railway Station. Further, around 40-50 people were going till Silchar.

Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) along with other NGOs made an effort to contribute to the national disaster which hit Kerala recently.

The CITU members were present here to distribute food packets to the people affected by Kerala floods. The food packets include water, apple, banana, and biscuits.

Another train is scheduled to reach Guwahati tomorrow. It is expected to carry more people than today, but it will be a regular train.
