Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, voiced strong concerns on Saturday, claiming that the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated and that the Hindu community is increasingly vulnerable. He described the situation as "very serious and delicate."
“Even to celebrate Hindu festivals, people are forced to approach the courts. Violence continued today, and yesterday there were two fatalities, with another person reportedly killed in police firing,” Adhikari said during a media interaction. He also alleged that Hindu-owned shops in Dhuliyan were targeted and looted during the unrest.
According to the BJP leader, 35 police personnel have been injured so far in efforts to contain the violence. He criticised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her government of indulging in “appeasement politics.”
Adhikari stated that he had previously appealed to the Governor for the deployment of central forces in West Bengal and renewed his request to the Chief Minister. With no action reportedly taken, he said he has now approached the courts for intervention.
Highlighting the rising tensions, he also mentioned that a BJP rally is scheduled for tomorrow at College Square in Kolkata. “The ground reality is grim — Hindus are not safe in Bengal,” he asserted.
The state government has yet to issue an official response to Adhikari’s remarks. Meanwhile, security has been heightened in sensitive areas, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
