GUWAHATI: Tezpur University has taken a progressive step in support of female students by introducing menstrual leave, allowing a two per cent relaxation in minimum class attendance. This development follows a directive from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD), Government of India, dated August 16, 2023.
In accordance with the directive, issued under letter no. F.N0.17-8/2023-U.5, Tezpur University has decided to implement menstrual leave for its female students, pending ratification by the Academic Council. This move recognises the unique challenges faced by female students during their menstrual cycles and aims to provide them with a supportive and inclusive academic environment.
Effective from the Autumn Semester 2023, the minimum class attendance requirement for female students at Tezpur University will be adjusted to 73 per cent. Speaking to G Plus, a senior official from Tezpur University said, "We have received the notice and will follow the orders for the female students in the University."
Tezpur University's decision to grant menstrual leave to female students aligns with the larger goal of promoting gender equality and well-being in educational institutions. It acknowledges that menstruation can sometimes lead to physical discomfort and health challenges, making it necessary to provide female students with the flexibility to manage their academic commitments during such times.
