Telegram To Be Banned In India? Govt Probes Company After CEO’s Arrest

Depending on the findings, the investigation could potentially result in a ban on the app.

The probe is being carried out by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

This investigation follows the arrest of Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov in Paris on Saturday, August 24, reportedly due to the app’s inadequate moderation policies, which have allegedly failed to prevent criminal activities on the platform.

The final decision on the app's future in India will be determined by the outcome of the investigation. Currently, Telegram complies with India’s Information Technology (IT) Rules, which mandate the appointment of a nodal officer, a chief compliance officer, and the publication of monthly compliance reports.
